University cell phones and service plans are provided by Rogers Communications.

Plans & Packages

There are two plans available to the York Community:

Voice, Text, & Data

Plan Cost $19.05/mth includes, unlimited local calling, 6GB of data, unlimited Canada-wide SMS/MMS.

Exceeding 6GB of data in any given month, the monthly rate will automatically change to $49.75 giving you unlimited data.

Adding unlimited Nationwide long distance is an additional $3.13/mth

Travelling with Rogers service includes Roam Like Home.  Coverage while abroad is automatic.

How is Roam Like Home charged?

The first time you use your phone network in another country where Roam Like Home is covered, you will be charged*. The charge is $12/24 hours in the United States, and $20/24 hours Internationally**.  After every 24 hours another charge will apply. There is no limit.

Would I be charged if data were turned off and use only WIFI?

If you do not want to use any services on your network, ensure you are using Airplane Mode on your device.

Any usage on a network is subject to a charge. If a single text is sent/received, phone call made/received or data connection made, the full charge of Roam Like Home will apply for 24 hours**.

If I use my phone on day 1 and 3 of my trip, but not on day 2, what charges would apply?

You would only be charged for the two days your phone was being used on the network. Charges are only applied for each 24-hour period where the phone is used. No usage, no charge.  To ensure no connection is made your device needs to be in Airplane Mode.

At Rogers, we are committed to helping our customers use their wireless services as effectively as possible. As a result, effective February 3, 2020, we are shutting down data roaming for Cruise Ships (Maritime) and Airplane (Satellite) locations. This change is being made to help customers avoid unexpectedly high roaming charges. You will still be able to connect through Voice and SMS roaming (the standard roaming rate for Cruise Ships is $4/min for voice calls and $0.75/text for SMS; the standard roaming rate for Air Planes is $7/min for voice calls and $0.75/text for SMS).

Is the cost for new device charged up-front or built into the monthly fee?

The cost of new device, as a one-time only charge applied to your first Rogers invoice. AppleCare (if applicable) and any accessories ordered will also be charged on your Rogers invoice.

What is the contract term?

  • Contract term is 2-years (to take advantage of the 65% discounted hardware cost)*
  • Signing a month to month contract the hardware cost will be full retail
  • * If service is cancelled, or if an individual takes ownership of their number (whether staying with Rogers or moving to another provider) prior to the end of their contract, applicable cancellation fees will be applied to their final Rogers invoice. Cancellations fees are not prorated. Contact Telecom, ext 58062 - cellular@yorku.ca for current cancellation fees if applicable.

    Who is eligible to move to a new Rogers plan?

    Any existing Telus corporate client is eligible.

    • Although transitioning to the new Rogers plan will result in a monthly rate plan cost savings, some conditions may apply:
      • If a department wishes to move to the new Rogers plans prior to the expiry of their existing contract, a $100 contract termination fee, plus the remaining device balance will be charged to their final Telus invoice.
      • A $50 unlocking fee may apply if the client continues to use their existing hardware.
      • The department will be responsible for all such fees

      What plans and options are available?

      There are two primary plans available to qualified York University staff & faculty:

      • Voice only plan for $4.75/mth includes, unlimited local calling and unlimited Canada-wide SMS. (MMS not included as data is required)
      • Voice and Data plan for $19.05/mth includes, unlimited local calling, 6GB of data, unlimited Canada-wide SMS/MMS.
      • If you exceed 6GB of data in any given month, the monthly rate will automatically tier to $49.75 giving you unlimited data.
      • Adding unlimited Nationwide long distance is an additional $3.13 monthly.

      How can I find out the contract status on my existing account?

      • Provide the phone number in question for current contract obligations and early cancellation fees.

      Can I stay with Telus even after my current contract expires?

      Although you won’t automatically be ported to Rogers once your contract is fulfilled with Telus, there will be a substantial cost savings earned by moving your service at such time. In many cases, cancelling an existing contract and moving to Rogers does, in fact, result cost savings over the long run even after paying the cancellation fee.

      Can I retain and use my existing device and phone number with Rogers?

      • Yes!
      • You can keep your existing device and phone number. Contact cellular@yorku.ca to arrange for a new Rogers SIM card to be swapped into the phone.
      • A $50 unlocking fee may charged by the carrier to unlock your existing hardware for use on the Rogers network. Contact Telecom, ext 58062 - cellular@yorku.ca to confirm

      What happens to my existing hardware if I get a new device?

      Devices that are no longer under a university cellular contract are considered surplus and—in compliance with the university surplus asset policy—shall be returned to UIT/Telecommunications for disposal or redeployment at the time of service transfer to Rogers.
